Ring Resizing in Carlsbad
A ring that spins, pinches or won't come off shouldn't live in a drawer. We size gold, platinum and silver rings at our Carlsbad showroom — with the stones checked, the seam invisible and a price you agree to before we start.
Fingers change. Your ring can too.
Almost everyone needs a ring resized at some point. Fingers swell in the summer heat, shrink in the cold, and change over the years — and gifts and heirlooms rarely arrive in exactly the right size.
A good resize keeps everything you love about the ring: its shape, its stones and its finish. It should feel like the ring was always made for you.
- Too looseThe ring spins, slides to one side or you worry it will slip off.
- Too tightIt leaves a mark, pinches, or is hard to get over the knuckle.
- InheritedA family ring you want to wear every day, not keep in a box.
- A new chapterAn engagement ring bought as a surprise, before you knew the size.
What's your ring size?
Get a close estimate at home in a minute. We'll confirm it with professional sizers before any work begins.
Wrap a thin strip of paper around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, then measure the length in millimetres.
- Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are warm and at their largest.
- Make sure the ring will still slide over your knuckle.
- For wide bands (6 mm or more), choose a quarter to half size larger.
A very common size — resizing from here is usually straightforward.
Can my ring be resized?
Answer three questions for an honest first answer. Nothing replaces seeing the ring, but this tells you what to expect.
Yes — this is a routine resize.
Plain gold bands are the easiest rings to size. We cut, add or remove a small amount of metal, solder, reshape and polish until the join disappears.
Careful work you'll never notice
Resizing is precise bench work. Here's what happens to your ring from the moment you hand it over.
Measure & inspect
We confirm your size with professional sizers and look over the whole ring — prongs, stones, thin spots and any engraving — so there are no surprises. You get a firm quote before anything starts.
Protect the stones
Diamonds and sapphires tolerate heat, but emeralds, opals, pearls and some treated gems don't. Those are shielded or carefully removed and reset afterwards.
Cut, adjust & solder
To go smaller we remove a precise section of the shank; to go larger we add matching metal. The joint is soldered with the same alloy so it's as strong as the rest of the band.
Reshape on the mandrel
The ring is trued on a sizing mandrel so it's perfectly round and sits evenly on your finger — no flat spots, no wobble.
Finish & final check
We file and polish until the seam disappears, re-plate white gold with rhodium, tighten any stones that need it and check the size one last time.
What can be resized?
| Metal | Resizable? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow & rose gold | Yes | The easiest metal to size up or down; the seam blends in completely. |
| White gold | Yes | Sized like yellow gold, then re-plated with rhodium so the colour is even. |
| Platinum | Yes | Needs higher heat and more skill, but resizes beautifully and stays strong. |
| Sterling silver | Yes | Resizable; very thin or plated silver rings may be better replaced. |
| Titanium | Limited | Can sometimes be stretched about half a size; many titanium rings can't be changed. |
| Tungsten, ceramic, carbide | No | Too hard to cut and solder. Options: exchange with the maker, a sizing insert, or a new ring. |
Every ring is quoted in person before we begin — no surprises, no obligation.
- MetalPlatinum takes more time and heat than gold or silver.
- Band width & thicknessWider, heavier bands need more metal and work.
- StonesSide stones and halos may need to be protected, removed or tightened.
- How many sizesLarger changes can need added metal or a new shank section.
More than a new size
Because the ring is already in our hands, resizing is the ideal time to take care of anything else it needs.
Worn prongs can be re-tipped so your diamond stays secure, loose stones tightened, a thin shank rebuilt, and an old inscription re-engraved. For heirloom rings, we can also talk about a gentle redesign that keeps the stone and the story. See all of our jewelry services, or explore custom design.
Ring resizing FAQ
At Bravo Jewellers, ring sizing ranges from $120 to $700. The price depends on the metal, the width and thickness of the band, whether the ring has stones near the shank, and how many sizes it needs to move. We give you an exact quote before any work starts.
Most gold and platinum rings can comfortably go up or down about two sizes. Larger changes are often still possible, but may need extra metal or a new section of shank so the band keeps its strength and shape.
No. Tungsten, ceramic and carbide rings cannot be resized, and titanium can only be adjusted a little, if at all. Eternity bands with stones all the way around are difficult because there is no plain metal to cut. For rings that cannot be resized, a sizing insert, a remake or wearing the ring on another finger are common alternatives.
Not when it is done properly. The stones and settings are checked before and after, heat-sensitive gems such as emeralds, opals and pearls are protected or removed first, and the band is reshaped and polished so it stays round and strong.
A well-finished resize is practically invisible. The seam is soldered, filed and polished to match the rest of the band. White gold rings are usually re-plated with rhodium afterwards so the colour is even all the way around.
Measure the circumference of your finger with a strip of paper, or the inside diameter of a ring that fits, and convert it with the ring size finder on this page. Measure at the end of the day when your fingers are warm, and make sure the ring will still slide over your knuckle. We confirm the size with professional sizers before resizing.
