Prong Retipping in Carlsbad
A worn prong is the most common reason a diamond goes missing. Our bench jewelers rebuild thin, flattened or snagging prongs right here in our Carlsbad workshop, matched to your metal and shaped so the repair disappears.
- Free inspection under magnification
- Many retips finished the same day
- Done in-house by our own goldsmiths, never shipped out
What prong retipping actually fixes
Prongs are the small metal claws that hold a stone in its setting. Every time your hand brushes a counter, a steering wheel or a beach towel, a tiny amount of metal wears off the tips. After a few years of daily wear, a full, rounded prong can shrink to a thin sliver that barely reaches over the edge of the stone.
Retipping adds fresh metal to the top of each worn prong, then files and polishes it back to a full profile. The prong stays where it is; only the missing tip is rebuilt. It is the least invasive way to make a setting secure again, and it costs a fraction of replacing a lost diamond.
Signs your prongs need retipping
Prong wear happens slowly, so it is easy to miss. Check your ring in good light and look for any of these.
-
It catches on sweaters or hair
A snag usually means a tip has lifted or worn down to a sharp edge.
-
The tips look flat or shiny
Healthy prongs look rounded. Flat, mirror-bright tops mean metal has been ground away.
-
More of the stone's edge is showing
If you can see the girdle of your diamond between prong and stone, the grip is loosening.
-
The stone moves or clicks
Tap the stone gently with a fingernail. Any rattle means it is time to stop wearing the ring until it is checked.
-
It has been a year or more since a check
Rings worn every day usually need a prong check every six to twelve months and retipping every few years.
If a stone already feels loose, put the ring in a small sealed bag and bring it in. We will inspect it under magnification at no charge.
How we retip prongs in our Carlsbad workshop
Your ring never leaves the building. The goldsmith who inspects it is the one who repairs it, at a bench a few steps from where you drop it off.
-
Inspect under magnification
We check every prong, the stone's seat and the head for cracks, and show you which tips need metal.
-
Agree on a plan and price
You get a clear quote before anything starts. We only retip the prongs that actually need it.
-
Protect the stone
Diamonds, rubies and sapphires can usually stay set under a protective coating. Heat-sensitive gems such as emerald, opal, tanzanite and pearl are removed first and reset afterward.
-
Build up each worn tip
Matching 14k, 18k or platinum alloy is fused to the tip, creating enough fresh metal to shape a strong new bead over the stone.
-
Shape, polish and finish
Each tip is filed to match its neighbours and polished smooth. White gold is rhodium plated so the color is even from every angle.
-
Final check and clean
We confirm the stone sits level and does not move, then steam clean the ring so it is ready to wear home.
Prong retipping prices
Price depends on the metal, how many prongs need work and how worn they are. The ranges below cover the most common jobs; your exact price is quoted after a free inspection, before any work begins.
| Repair | 14k or 18k gold | Platinum |
|---|---|---|
| Retip a single prong | $120 to $150 | $150 to $200 |
| Retip all four prongs on a solitaire | $180 to $320 | $260 to $450 |
| Retip all six prongs on a solitaire | $240 to $400 | $340 to $550 |
| Rebuild a prong from the base (re-prong) | $150 to $250 | $200 to $300 |
| Replace the whole head | $300 to $600 | $450 to $700 |
Halo, three-stone and cluster rings are quoted individually because prong counts vary. Rhodium plating and any stone removal are listed on your quote. See our full list of jewelry repair services, including stone setting and ring sizing.
Retipping, re-pronging or a new head?
All three make a stone secure again. The right choice depends on how much sound metal is left, and we will only recommend what your ring needs.
Retipping
The prong is healthy but the tip is thin. We add metal to the top only. This is the most common and most affordable fix, and the right one when wear is caught early.
Re-pronging
A prong is cracked, bent or worn too low to take new metal. We replace the whole prong from its base and shape it to match the others.
A new head
When most prongs are badly worn or the head is damaged, a new head is stronger and often better value. It is also a chance to update the look through our custom design studio.
Every metal, every setting
We retip with a matching alloy every time, so the repaired prong has the same color and hardness as the original and wears at the same rate.

Why North County rings wear faster
Coastal living is hard on prongs. Beach sand is mostly quartz, which is harder than both gold and platinum, so an afternoon at Tamarack or Moonlight Beach works on your prong tips like fine sandpaper. Surfing, paddleboarding on Agua Hedionda Lagoon, gardening, climbing and lifting at the gym all press on the setting and slowly flatten or bend the tips.
A few habits make a real difference: take rings off for the beach, the gym and yard work, store them separately so diamonds do not scratch other pieces, and bring them in for a check and cleaning twice a year. Our jewelry check and care visits are complimentary, and many clients from Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Encinitas and La Costa simply stop by whenever they are nearby.
Prong retipping questions
How do I know if my prongs need retipping?
Look for prongs that catch on clothing or hair, tips that look flat or shiny instead of rounded, more of the stone's edge showing than before, or a stone that moves when you tap it. If you notice any of these, bring the ring to Bravo Jewellers in Carlsbad and we will inspect it under magnification at no charge.
How much does prong retipping cost in Carlsbad?
Most prong retipping at Bravo Jewellers falls between $120 and $700. A single gold prong typically starts at $120, retipping all four prongs on a gold solitaire usually runs $180 to $320, and platinum costs more because it needs higher heat and more time. You receive an exact quote after a free inspection, before any work begins.
How long does prong retipping take?
Many retipping jobs are finished the same day. Turnaround depends on the number of prongs, the metal and whether a heat-sensitive stone has to be removed and reset. We give you a firm pickup time when you drop the ring off.
What is the difference between retipping and re-pronging?
Retipping rebuilds only the worn top of an existing prong. Re-pronging replaces the entire prong from its base, which is needed when a prong is cracked, bent or worn too low to hold new metal. We assess each prong individually and recommend only what keeps your stone secure.
Can you retip platinum and white gold prongs?
Yes. We retip yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum and sterling silver, always with a matching alloy so the repair has the same color and hardness as the original prong. White gold rings are rhodium plated afterward so the finish is even.
Can you retip a ring I did not buy at Bravo Jewellers?
Absolutely. We work on rings from any jeweler, including inherited and antique pieces. Our bench jewelers will look at the setting with you and explain the best repair before any work starts.
How often should I have my prongs checked?
For rings worn every day, we recommend a prong check every six to twelve months. The inspection takes a few minutes, it is complimentary, and it is the simplest way to catch wear before a stone comes loose.
